HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The National Weather Service has cancelled the Flash Flood Watch that was in effect for Niihau, Kauai and Oahu. Forecasters said the trough west of the islands responsible for the unstable conditions is weakening, thereby lowering the threat of widespread heavy rain. However, a few isolated moderate to heavy showers are still possible overnight, mainly around Kauai.Scattered showers are also still possible statewide, but their exact times and locations will be hard to pinpoint due to continued high moisture levels in our atmosphere.
Weather will improve gradually over the next few days. Winds are expected to be light through Wednesday with local and sea breezes. High pressure should rebuild north and northeast of the state, bringing a return of the tradewinds Thursday, in time to blow away some of the fireworks smoke on New Year's eve. More sunshine is expected, along with a few showers for windward and mauka areas, by the end of the week.
