KOLOA, Kauai (HawaiiNewsNow) - Investigators believe a house fire killed an elderly woman on Kauai early Sunday morning, just hours after she celebrated the holidays with her family.
The blaze broke out at around 2:45 a.m. at a home on Aloha Place in Koloa. Fire crews from three stations worked hard to try to stop the flames. It took them about 25 minutes to control the fire.
Firefighters found the woman's body when they entered the home to mop up after the tragedy. The woman's grandson said he was thankful that she was able to spend Christmas dinner with her family Saturday night, and that she had lived a good, long life.
"We really tried our hardest to save her life," said grandson Robert Yamamoto. "She was a wonderful woman, but within seconds, we were overcome by the smoke and the flames, and we just couldn't save her, and that's the saddest part.
"It's just a sad situation that that happened, but we just want everyone to know that she love us all, and we loved her, and that's it," Yamamoto said.
The woman's name has not been officially released. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Volunteers from the Red Cross are assisting the family.
