Police ramp up illegal fireworks arrests

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow ) - Honolulu police have arrested three Oahu residents for selling or using illegal aerial fireworks, as authorities ramp up enforcement in anticipation of a noisy New Year's Eve.

According to police, Jacqueline S.Y. Lee and Ikaikaalii Smith of Makakilo were arrested Wednesday and charged with selling fireworks without a license. Each was released on $100 bail.

Ranie Ranga of Kahili was arrested Tuesday for using prohibited aerials. He was released on $1,000 bail.

A new city fireworks law that takes effect Jan. 2 bans all fireworks, except firecrackers, on Oahu.

Some have predicted that, as a result, there will be a lot more fireworks set off before the law takes effect, both the legal and illegal kinds.
