HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - U.S. Census Bureau figures released Tuesday show Hawaii's population reached 1,360,301 on April 1, 2010, a population increase of about 12.3 percent over the last decade.

Hawaii's population ranking moved up two places in 2010 to the 40th place in the nation from 42nd in 2000.

In terms of average annual growth, Hawaii's population grew at an annual rate of 1.2 percent between 2000 and 2010, higher than the 0.9 percent annual growth between 1990 and 2010.

Between April 1, 2000 and April 1, 2010, Hawaii gained 148,764 persons. This growth rate is higher than 9.3 percent growth rate experienced between 1990 and 2000.

In terms of population density, Hawaii's 211.8 people per square mile in 2010 is 2.42 times of the U.S. population density.

The faster growth of Hawaii's population in the most recent decade than the previous one may due to the economic growth at the beginning of the decade, according to the report.

Hawaii's economy grew at an annual rate of 4.1 percent between 2001 and 2006.

Including the economic recession of 2008 and 2009, the economic growth rate in Hawaii between 2000 and 2009 was 2.3 percent per year. Hawaii's economy experienced no growth between 1990 and 2000.
