HONOLULU (AP) - The state plans to break ground on a new boat ramp in Hana this week.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources says the $3.8 million project due to begin Thursday will replace the existing boat launch ramp and inner rock revetment.
The state also intends to install new security lighting and build a new aluminum loading dock and walkway.
The existing boat ramp is slippery and badly deteriorated.
Concrete and rock debris and boulders eroded by breakwater pose a hazard to navigation and need to be removed.
Interim chair of the Board of Land and Natural Resources William Aila says the boat ramp is essential for residents and visitors of the small Maui community to gain safe and easy access to the ocean.
