Man killed in Kona head-on crash identified

KONA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man who was killed in a Kona car accident Sunday night has been identified.

Police say the victim was Brian Anthony Margate of Kailua-Kona.

The crash happened just after 7:00 p.m. on Queen Kaahumanu Highway near Nani Kailua Drive.

Kona patrol officers determined that a 20-year-old Kailua-Kona woman was driving a 2005 Ford F-350 pickup truck and towing a horse trailer. Officers say the truck crossed the center line and crashed head on with a 2001 Volkswagen sedan, operated by Margate.

Margate was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he later died.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

It is unknown if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

This is the 27th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared to 22 at this time in 2009.
