Hawaii foreclosure filings down

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The mainland research company RealtyTrac counted 877 foreclosure filings across Hawaii in November, down a third from October to the lower level of last year.

Because RealtyTrac counts all stages of foreclosure filings, the number can be used as an indicator of mortgage distress but counts some cases more than once. Most foreclosure proceedings are settled through short sales and Hawaii has only a handful of actual foreclosures per month.

The breakdown by county:

  • Oahu 426.
  • Big Island 212.
  • Maui Co. 177.
  • Kauai 62.

Hotspots of foreclosure activity included Kailua-Kona with 67, Kihei with 63, and Ewa with 56.

There were 30 filings in zip code 96815, Waikiki.
