KAHULUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A central Maui elementary school gets a gift they hoped for this holiday season: rubber slippers.

Staff members at Kahului Elementary give slippers out to students that need them, but the school runs out of extras since more than half their kids struggle financially.

Newly elected Board of Education member Leona Rocha-Wilson found out about it, then asked her church friends for donations.

She and her nephew collected three large garbage bags full of slippers from St. Theresa's Church and gave them to the school.
