Chemical analysis shows Hawaii's magma very shallow

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An Ohio college student has made a big discovery about Hawaii's volcanoes.

Julie Ditkof says a chemical analysis of magma samples from the islands shows the underground pool of lava that feeds our volcanoes, may be the shallowest in the world.

It's just about 2 miles deep.

In comparison, Iceland's magma chamber is 12 miles deep.

Ditkof's findings could help scientists predict future eruptions.
