Kauai utility faces fines for harming endangered seabirds

KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Kauai's power company has been fined $40,000 for harming endangered seabirds.

The utility cooperative pleaded guilty to violating both the Endangered Species Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act after Newell's Shearwaters were harmed or killed by its power lines and street lights.

In recent years, the KIUC says it's spent about $4 million to protect the birds.
