'Eddie' opening ceremony kicks off at Waimea Bay

WAIMEA BAY (HawaiiNewsNow) - A celebration of big wave surfing took a somber tone Thursday at Waimea Bay.

The opening ceremony for the Quiksilver Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau brought together dozens of the world's best surfers.

Through prayers and Hawaiian chants, they reflected on the recent loss of two former invitees: Andy Irons and Marvin Foster.

Andy's brother Bruce, a former Eddie champion himself, is one of 28 surfers invited to compete if and when the waves hit 20 feet.

The contest has run only eight times in 26 years.
