AIEA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man was taken to the hospital in critical condition Wednesday morning following a crash on the Moanalua Freeway.
The single-car accident happened just before 6:30 a.m. near the Kamehameha Highway off ramp, 65 feet east of the Aiea overpass.
The man was heading westbound in a 1999 green Ford Explorer when the vehicle veered to the right shoulder, continued up the dirt embankment and crashed into the pillars under Aiea Access Road.
The vehicle then crashed into a guard rail on the left shoulder lane.
Police say there was major damage to the vehicle's driver side and roof.
The man was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
He suffered serious head injuries and was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.
Police say the accident occurred on a wet roadway during dawn conditions.
It is unknown if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
