Wanted Wednesday UPDATE: Leighton Kawai

UPDATE: Leighton Kawai was arrested on Dec. 4 for three $50,000 warrants. Kawai was arrested at 87-122 Helelua Street in Waianae just after 4:00 a.m.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - He has three felony contempt warrants out for his arrest, and police need your help locating this fugitive. Leighton Kawai is the subject of this Wanted Wednesday profile.

On Nov. 3, 2007, a 49-year-old man parked his Chevy Silverado at the Nanakuli Fastop gas station just after 10:30 p.m. He returned a few minutes later and found that his truck had been stolen.

"On November 5 at about 2:20 a.m., an officer on Farrington Highway and Hookele Street was driving and observed the truck," said Kim Buffett of CrimeStoppers. "He ran the license plate and found that it was stolen. There were four occupants in the truck."

Police identified the driver as Leighton Kawai. Officers arrested him for unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. Then on December 28, 2007, an officer spotted a Honda traveling westbound on Pokai Bay Drive without a safety sticker.

"Conducted a traffic stop and found that the vehicle had been reported stolen on October 27 from Palahia Street," said Buffett. "The driver again was identified as Kawai."

Police busted the 22-year-old again for auto theft.

"The last case on January 25, 2008, at about 7:37 a.m., a complainant reported his vehicle stolen from the driveway of Kikaha Street," said Buffett.

Less than an hour later the vehicle was found outside the Nanakuli Fastop store. Officers arrested Kawai for UCPV. Now he is wanted for three $50,000 warrants for failing to appear for a probation review hearing.

He's described as 5'7", 180 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

"His eight priors are for drugs, abuse, car thefts, CPD and disorderly conduct," said Buffett.

Kawai is known to hang out in Leeward Oahu. Helping police catch him could earn you a reward of up to $1,000. Leighton Kawai is this week's Wanted Wednesday fugitive.
