HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A day after Sen. Daniel Inouye made his plea on the Senate floor, the U.S. Senate rejected an attempt to ban earmarks.

Democrats and a handful of Republicans defeated the effort, which would have effectively forbidden the Senate from considering legislation containing earmarks for local projects.

Senators Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka were vocal opponents of the ban.
