Elderly pedestrian who died in Kalihi traffic crash identified

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An elderly woman who died early Saturday after she was hit by a car in a crosswalk in Kalihi has been identified.

Seventy-nine-year-old Monica Corrales was hit while crossing Likelike Highway, just north of Kalihi Street, at around 5:00 a.m. Saturday.

Investigators said Corrales was crossing the highway against the traffic signal.

Kaneohe-bound lanes of the highway were closed for nearly three hours while police investigated.

Corrales was taken in critical condition to the Queens Medical Center, where she later died.

It's not known yet whether speed or alcohol were involved.

The death is Oahu's 55th traffic fatality of the year, compared to 49 a year ago.

It's also the 19th fatality involving a pedestrian this year.
