HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Sad news for the Lt. Governor Duke Aiona.
His mother, Frances Aiona, passed away Tuesday evening of natural causes.
"My mom was my hero and our entire ohana is deeply saddened by her passing," Lt. Governor Aiona said. "She was an extraordinary woman and a compassionate, tireless educator who instilled in me a lifelong love for learning and mentorship. I am at a loss for words to describe how important she was in my life and the lives of countless others. During this difficult time, Vivian and I humbly ask for privacy while we make final arrangements."
Frances Aiona was a teacher at Navy Hale Keiki School for more than two decades and was honored by Gov. Lingle in 2007 for her dedication.
Frances Aiona was 93 years old.
Instead of flowers, the Aiona family is asking that donations be made to the Reid J.K. Richards Foundation, which was Frances Aiona's favorite charity.
The foundation was established on behalf of the Lt. Governor's nephew, Reid, who died at age 33. The foundation helps those who have lost a parent to cope with the grieving process.
