Crews to excavate contaminated land at Pier 29

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - You may notice a foul odor in the air as you drive through Iwilei over the next few months.

Crews will begin excavating contaminated land at a container yard on Pier 29 in late December.

The ground is saturated with old petroleum, which could really stink when there are no trade winds or the Kona winds blow.

The excavation work will continue through March.

The entire re-construction project to install new drainage, lighting and electrical systems, is scheduled to be completed in spring 2012.
