NANAKULI (HawaiiNewsNow) - An unusual and potentially dangerous discovery was made Sunday morning in waters off Leeward Oahu. Hawaiian Electric Company workers were conducting routine maintenance on an intake valve at the Kahe Power Plant when they discovered a mysterious object in three feet of water. It was thought to be some kind of ordnance, prompting a visit from the Honolulu Police Department bomb squad.

"We took a look at it. We determined that it should be looked at by the Navy," said police Sgt. Thomas Carreiro. He added, "It appears something we're not real concerned about, but at the same time we want to make sure that all precautions are taken."

The device is reported to be relatively small and covered with coral and barnacles. Carreiro said it could be a sonar buoy, but positive identification has yet to be made.
