KANEOHE (HawaiiNewsNow) - On the 18th green at Koolau Golf Club, the man with the putter is playing a role, not playing for par.
"Are you a golfer?" he's asked.
"No. They didn't tell me the first thing I was going to do was putt with everybody watching," Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa said.
Tagawa's movie resume spans twenty-plus years with films like The Last Emperor, Pearl Harbor and Mortal Kombat on his credit list.
On an upcoming Hawaii Five-O Tagawa makes Steve McGarrett's hit list.
Director Brad Turner calls Tagawa's character, Hiro Noshimuri, a sophisticated bad guy.
"His face is on screen. So it's very important to him that he's well-represented. Man, he's a pro," he said.
It'll take hours to film one scene that'll be on screen for only a couple of minutes.
Tagawa said the original Five-O and the new one are like night and day.
"I've been reading the blogs. I always keep up with that stuff. So you get split between people saying, 'Why are you even trying?' and other folks say, 'I saw the old one. I really like this one,'" he said.
The episode Tagawa stars in also introduces another familiar face. Mark Dacascos, the host of Iron Chef enters the Five-O universe as Wo Fat.
Tagawa used to live on Oahu. He now lives in Sedona, Arizona.
Five-O is a homecoming.
"I'm just doing my little part in this," he said. "But I'm coming back to do some big programs for kids."
Tagawa will have a recurring role in Hawaii Five-O.
