HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hours before the announcement, the maker of "Four Loko" said it was removing caffeine from its formula.
The popular drink contains as much alcohol as three or more beers. Plus, the caffeine in a cup or more of coffee, which experts say masks the alcohol.
"Four Loko" has been nicknamed "'blackout in a can."
It's blamed for illnesses and even deaths on college campuses and in traffic accidents.
It's already been banned in five states, but is still available here in Hawaii.
The company says, "We firmly believe that consumed legally, by adult purchasers, we don't have the kind of problems that they're saying arise."
