Abercrombie to release $23.7M for social service organizations

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Governor-elect Neil Abercrombie says he will release nearly $ 24 million from the state's rainy day fund to help more than three-dozen social service organizations.

Lawmakers appropriated the funds for "safety net" agencies in the last legislative session, but Gov. Lingle said it's not prudent to release the money during the state's "fragile" economic recovery.

Forty-two agencies and non-profits, including Catholic charities, Kupuna Care and Healthy Start will receive the funds when they are released.
