HONOLULU (AP) - A University of Hawaii office is set to sponsor Hawaii's version of the American Cancer Society's 35th annual "Great American Smokeout."
The event on Thursday will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at UH Manoa's Campus Center.
The Health Promotion Office of University Health Services is sponsoring it.
The nationwide event encourages smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day.
According to the cancer society, tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States.
It says smoking accounts for $193 billion in health care expenditures and productivity losses, and claims thousands of lives each year.
