LIHUE (HawaiiNewsNow) - High school football games on Kauai have been shifted to daylight hours so stadium lights won't disorient the threatened Newell's Shearwater birds.
Now, state and federal environmental agencies want to implement a habitat conservation plan to protect the Shearwater and two other rare bird species.
Under the plan, businesses would have to minimize threats by removing or covering lights, burying power lines and training staff to deal with injured birds.
They'd also have to apply for permits allowing for a certain number of birds to be injured or killed.
A public meeting will be held Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School cafeteria in Lihue.
