KIHEI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A newly expanded 10,000-square-foot edible garden installed at Kihei Elementary School will allow more than 500 students plant fruits and vegetables.

It's all part of the South Maui School Garden Project, a program of South Maui Sustainability.

Two local chefs have signed on as major sponsors of the program, Capische Restaurant owner and chef Brian Etheredge, and A Private Maui Chef owner and chef Dan Fiske.

Their sponsorship, along with a County of Maui grant and other private donations will help fund additional garden materials and a part-time school garden coordinator position.

The chefs will also use their culinary flair to teach food education courses and host harvest parties later in the season.
