HECO, IBEW talk past deadline

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Local 1260 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers continued to work at the bargaining table past a Sunday contract deadline.

IBEW negotiated into Monday morning with Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric and the Big Island's Hawaii Electric Light Co., all subsidiaries of Hawaiian Electric Industries.

When contract talks continue past a contract deadline without a strike, it often signals that the two sides feel they are making progress.

The three electric utilities employ more than 1,600 people who belong to the IBEW, including clerical workers as well as actual electricians.
