HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Waipahu man accused of stabbing his wife while she was sleeping with their children last year pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of first-degree attempted assault Thursday.

Herminio Sol, 65, was originally charged with attempted murder. Under a plea agreement with prosecutors, he will receive a 10-year prison term when he is sentenced in January.

Mary Grace Sol testified at a preliminary hearing last year that her husband didn't say a word after he plunged the knife into her. The attack happened at the family's Puloku Street home on September 5, 2009.

At the time, family members said the defendant may have been overwhelmed by mounting medical bills following his surgery for prostate cancer.
