Charges filed against former school employee

HONOLULU (AP) - A former school administrative services assistant at a public school on Oahu has been charged with theft and forgery.

State prosecutors said Wednesday that 35-year-old Janel Echiberi is facing two counts of second-degree theft and two counts of second-degree forgery.

A complaint says that between 2004 and 2008, Echiberi stole school funds and forged documents approving the use of school funds while employed by Lehua Elementary School in Pearl City. The amount of funds wasn't disclosed.

Defense attorney Benjamin Ignacio said Echiberi was set to plead guilty Thursday in Circuit Court under a plea agreement with prosecutors.
