Hawaii receives $3.6 million mental health grant

HONOLULU (AP) - The state Department of Health says its received a $3.6 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to fund service provider training.

The grant provides the state with $730,000 each year over five years.

Health Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said Tuesday the grant will help the state provide advanced services and training that will enhance the quality of care for some of Hawaii's most vulnerable people.

The grant will help providers learn the neurological and psychological effects of stress and traumatic experiences.

The state says the program will ease some challenges faced by both service providers and recipients as patients recover and strive to become independent.
