UH plans rally to encourage voting on Nov. 2

HONOLULU (AP) - The University of Hawaii at Manoa is set to hold a rally aimed at encouraging students and others to vote in the Nov. 2 general election.

The free "Use Your Voice, Use Your Vote" event is scheduled on Tuesday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the lawn adjacent to the campus' Hawaii Hall and Varney Circle.

Rally organizers point out that voter turnout was as high as 84 percent when Hawaii became a state in 1959. They say that by 2008, turnout had dropped to 37%, among the lowest rates in the country.

The rally is being sponsored by the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly, the Graduate Students Organization, Kanu Hawaii and KTUH radio.

Hawaiian Studies Professor Jon Kamakawiwoole Osorio will be the master of ceremonies.
