Free workshops planned for farm labor rules

HONOLULU (AP) - Free workshops are being scheduled to explain how farmers must treat their employees under federal and state law.

The sessions are planned for Nov. 8 in Kailua-Kona and Nov. 9 in Honolulu.

They will cover when workers must be paid overtime, why employees are considered seasonal workers even though they work year-round, what rules affect transporting farm workers, and why labor audits are being conducted on farms.

Speakers include Hawaii Board of Agriculture Chairwoman Sandra Lee Kunimoto, Department of Labor and Industrial Relations Wage Standards Administrator Pamela Martin and U.S. Department of Labor District Director Terry Trotter.

Similar workshops previously were held in Hilo, Waimea, Maui, Kauai and Oahu.
