Waikiki hotel contract talks resume

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Local 5 of the UNITE-HERE union was to return to the bargaining table Monday - with Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Two days of talks were scheduled, a week after a five-day strike by Local 5 that targeted the same hotel. Hilton and Local 5 have also scheduled two days of bargaining in November.

The strike at the Village ended late Monday night of last week, the same time Local 2 ended a strike against the Hilton Union Square in San Francisco and Local 1 ended a strike against the main Hilton hotel in Chicago. Workers at those hotels have been without a contract for a year. Contracts in Waikiki expired this past summer.

Sources in the Waikiki talks say Local 5 made an early proposal for housekeeping wages to be raised from less than $17 an hour to more than $19, while news media in Chicago and San Francisco said Hilton made an early proposal to make housekeepers clean 20 rooms per shift instead of 15. The two sides in labor contract negotiations rarely insist on provisions contained in their first proposals.
