MAUI and KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The season's first humpback whales have arrived in Hawaii.
A Maui captain reported a sighting Wednesday off the west side.
Chris Howard, captain of the Alii Nui Catamaran says he saw a young male at about 9:30 a.m. two miles off the west Maui coast.
He also spotted two spouts off in the distance.
The Pacific Whale Foundation says it's the first sighting of the year.
Although, we also got a report from Kauai that a captain with Holoholo Charters saw a humpback on Saturday.
Either way, the annual migration is right on time.
The first whales to make the 3,000 mile trip from Alaska have shown up in October the past few years.
The season peaks in the spring.
