State extends closure of reserves

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - The state is extending its closure of Mauna Kea Forest Reserve and the Kaohe Game Management area on the Big Island because of the fire hazard conditions caused by the continued drought in the area.

The closure has been extended to the end of the year.

The land department's forestry and wildlife branch manager Roger Imoto says the closure is necessary to protect the sensitive and unique natural resources in the area.
