HONOLULU (AP) - The state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations is initiating an on-the-job training program to help the unemployed return to the workplace.
The department said Monday that the program will help workers gain new skills, technology capabilities and job experiences to meet the requirements of a new occupation or industry.
The program will be funded with a $602,000 federal grant.
The money will be used to help employers hire and train new workers who were laid off after Jan. 1, 2008, and who have been unemployed for 20 weeks or longer.
Officials say about 60 participants will be placed with employers willing to hire and provide training for up to six months.
