WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Police say a man who allegedly shot and critically wounded another man Friday evening is in custody. The shooting happened at around 6 p.m. Friday in a parking lot across Kapiolani Boulevard from the Hard Rock Café, near the intersection with Kalakaua.
According to police, the suspect turned himself in at the Pearl City police station shortly after 9:30 p.m.
Police said the shooting may have stemmed from an argument between two African-American men.
"One of the males chased the other one," said Honolulu Police Detective Jack Snyder. "Shots were fired, and the victim went to the hospital."
The victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but his condition was upgraded to serious about a half hour after the shooting.
Snyder said the victim was shot once in the chest, and at least once in the legs.
Investigators did not immediately release the names of either the victim or the suspect.
Snyder described the suspect as an "African-American male in his 30s, last seen in a silver vehicle, leaving the scene."
According to witnesses from a nearby lunch wagon, the two men knew each other, and had been arguing about a woman since yesterday. They said the suspect was eating when he was approached by the victim. The witnesses said the argument escalated, and then the suspect chased the victim and fired three shots before fleeing the scene.
