Pedestrian killed in Nanakuli

NANAKULI (HawaiiNewsNow) - An early morning crash left one person dead, and another under arrest on a negligent homicide charge.

It happened just after 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning near the intersection of Farrington Highway and Haleakala Avenue.

Traffic investigators said a 30-year old woman lost control of her SUV and collided into a pedestrian,  whom family members identified as Byron Ching, 40. The SUV then hit a telephone pole. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both the woman and a passenger in the vehicle were taken to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition. The woman later released from the hospital, but the passenger remained hospitalized in stable condition. Police arrested the woman, Marcela Guerrero Mercado of Waianae, on a charge of negligent homicide. She was released pending further investigation.
