HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A fourth grade teacher from Noelani Elementary School was named the 2011 State Teacher of the Year on Thursday.

Kristen Brummel earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in curriculum studies from UH Manoa.

Brummel has taught fourth grade at Noelani Elementary School since 2006, and has been a teacher for a total of seven years.

At Noelani Elementary School, Brummel welcomes her students at the beginning of each school year with postcards and "Getting to Know You Letters."

At the end of each school year, Brummel shares her hopes for each student by writing a personal letter, encouraging them to pursue their dreams.

Brummel uses technology in the classroom by providing interactive whiteboards and student response systems. She even uses an online grade book to share student performance with parents.

Aside from teaching her fourth grade class, Brummel is a grade-level chairperson, educational consultant, after-school Lego Robotics instructor and community volunteer.

As a part of the TOY award, she will receive a free one-year lease of a new car.
