Man who apparently drowned off Kauai waters identified

KAPAA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man who apparently drowned in waters off Pono Kai Resort Tuesday has been identified.

Kauai County Spokeswoman Mary Daubert confirmed the 65-year-old man was identified as Anthony Viquelia.

Fire officials say Viquelia, of Hanamaulu, was setting a fishing net in the water with two friends 300 feet off Hotel Coral Reef when he started to float away.

After losing sight of Viquelia, his two friends began to search for him, one swimming to the shore to find help.

Crews stopped their search when Viquelia was found floating face down in the water.

Firefighters tried to revive the man until medics arrived.

Viquelia was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No word yet on the man's official cause of death.
