Lingle may seek US Senate in 2012

HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii Republican Gov. Linda Lingle says she will consider running in 2012 for the U.S. Senate seat occupied by Democratic Sen. Daniel Akaka.

Lingle told KITV she hopes to return to elected office after she steps down in December after serving two terms.

Lingle said Friday she would "take a serious look" at the U.S. Senate in two years, when the 86-year-old Akaka would be up for re-election.

In the meantime, Lingle said she will work with the national Republican Party to help defeat Hawaii-born President Barack Obama in 2012.

After leaving the governor's mansion, Lingle said she hopes to volunteer as a reading tutor, move into a Hawaii Kai condominium and drive a Nissan Leaf electric car.
