HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - At around 10:30 Monday morning, fire crews were called to assist with a brush fire on Lualualei Naval Road.

The fire is on the Nanakuli side of Lualualei Naval Road.

As firefighters headed uphill to fight the flames, changes in the wind direction caused the fire to travel downhill, creating a fire swirl.

When firefighters appeared to be trapped, the battalion chief ordered crews to get off the hill.

A HFD hose was burned as a result.

During the mop up process, firefighters stumbled upon human skeletal remains in a burned out area of brush.  Capt.. Gary Lum says the remains are on ancient, but appears to have been there between 1-5 years.  The scene was turned over to Honolulu Police.

So far, officials estimate the fire has scorched about 50 acres.

No homes are affected in the area.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
