HONOLULU (AP) - Allies of Republican gubernatorial candidate James "Duke" Aiona are employing an innocuous phrase in television ads and brochures that has been used in different contexts over the years. But the motto "rise and shine," a variant of which appears in the biblical verse Isaiah 60:1, may be touching another chord in a state where some religious leaders are urging support for candidates with conservative social positions.
The phrase appears in four Republican Governors Association TV ads and thousands of brochures that promote Aiona. The phrase has secular connotations. But its religious references include popular children's, gospel and classical songs. An RGA spokesman said Friday the group was unaware of the biblical connotations.
