WAILUKU, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) - A woman has been found guilty of a lesser charge of manslaughter in the stabbing death of her boyfriend. Prosecutors say 23-year-old Rachel Berta was jealous and angry when she stabbed 33-year-old John Shaniyo in January of 2009.
The defense argued that Berta should be found not guilty by reason of insanity. The judge in the case ruled that Berta was under the influence of an extreme mental or emotional disturbance. Berta faces up to 20 years in prison when she is sentenced in December.
