HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow)- Hawaii Meals on Wheels' annual gala, the nonprofit organization's largest fundraising event of the year, will be held at The Willows Restaurant on Thursday, September 30, 2010, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The theme of this year's event is "Escape to Old Hawaii`."
"We continue to receive more and more requests for meals to be delivered to homebound older adults and those with disabilities," said Claire Shimabukuro, Hawaii` Meals on Wheels executive director. "As part of the community's safety net, we've been able to carry on our mission through the generosity of our supporters who share our concern about access to proper nutrition for older adults. We'll be celebrating their aloha spirit that hearkens back to the days of old Hawaii`."
There will be a number of hula halau, ukulele performances and other entertainment at The Willows Restaurant, a venue that provides the perfect backdrop for this year's theme. A silent auction, casino games, face painting, magician performances, and tarot and palm readers will round out the evening's festivities.
Virtually all of the money raised by Hawaii` Meals on Wheels – 90 percent -- goes toward program support and meals; only 10 percent of expenses are used for fundraising.
An average meal costs Hawaii` Meals on Wheels about $10. Clients are asked for a contribution to help defray half the costs of the meals. Some are able to make a contribution, while others are not able to give. Hawaii` Meals on Wheels relies on donations from corporations, foundations and individuals to help subsidize the costs of the meals.
