HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hundreds cleaned out their medicine cabinets, and got rid of old medications Saturday at the Moiliili Longs Drugstore.
Hawaii launched its Drug Take-Back program, which is part of a nationwide mission to get old prescriptions out of homes, where they can be stolen or lead to poisonings.
Officials say prescription drugs are quickly becoming the second most abused drugs in schools, just after marijuana.
Local drug enforcement agents say that one in seven teens admitted to abusing prescription drugs last year to get high.
Prescription drugs can also cause problems if they are discarded improperly.
Longs Drugs and Molokai Drugs will be taking back medications from now until December.
