HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Sheraton Hotels and Resorts Hawaii signed a 3-year extension to remain as title sponsor of the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, Executive Director David Matlin announced Wednesday. The extension is through the 2013 bowl game, which annually features teams from the Western Athletic Conference and Conference USA.
"Starwood and Kyo-ya are committed to supporting the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl in its effort to provide the community, and the University of Hawaii, with a premier sporting event," said Keith Vieira, senior vice president of operations – Hawaii and French Polynesia, Starwood Hotels & Resorts. "This partnership ensures a bowl opportunity for the University of Hawaii in the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics."
"We hope our contributions will play a part in having a positive impact on the lives of our athletes," Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ernest Nishizaki added. "We are proud that the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl is 'made in Hawaii, and played in Hawaii,' because it brings national and international recognition to our destination and gives the local residents the opportunity to enjoy the talents of these outstanding student-athletes."
"Our decision to continue this sponsorship was, to a large degree, driven by our desire to ensure the presence of a major college bowl event for our community and to provide the University of Hawaii Warriors with a potential venue to showcase the talents of its football team."
"We're thrilled to extend our relationship with such a valued partner as Sheraton for another three years," said Pete Derzis, Senior Vice President & General Manager, ESPN Regional Television. "This agreement ushers in a second decade of partnership with both Sheraton Hotels and Resorts and the University of Hawaii."
"The Sheraton Hawaii Bowl is critical for the future success of the UH football program," said UH Athletics Director Jim Donovan. "I'm very grateful that Keith Vieira, Michael Troy, and Ernie Nishizaki have stepped up to extend the Sheraton title sponsorship for the next three years. No matter what course we take, having the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl to play, if bowl eligible, is invaluable."
"We appreciate Sheraton's continued commitment to our bowl and the events surrounding the game, helping us to provide a first-class experience for the teams, coaches and fans," said Matlin. "We are also already planning our 10-year anniversary celebrations to mark the 2011 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl."
The Sheraton Hawaii Bowl is owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television. This year's game, the ninth edition, will be televised live from Aloha Stadium on Friday, Dec. 24, on ESPN.
