HONOLULU (AP) - Two interim Democratic senators are taking office. Laura Figueira and Ronald Kouchi were sworn in Wednesday by Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald. The two incoming senators replace former Senators Robert Bunda and Gary Hooser, both of whom resigned to seek the nomination for lieutenant governor.
They were both defeated in Saturday's primary election by former state Democratic Party chairman Brian Schatz.
Figueira will represent an Oahu North Shore district and Kouchi will represent a Kauai district until voters choose new senators during the November2 general election. Kouchi is running in the election to serve the last two years of Hooser's term.
