HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Honolulu has been named one of America's best communities for young people by America's Promise Alliance, a group committed to reducing high school dropout rates and promoting safer environments for young people. Honolulu was the only Hawaii community given the honor this year, and it is the third time that the city has been recognized in the 100 best.
The group cites Honolulu's support of programs that promote community service leadership opportunities for young people. They also praised Honolulu for providing safe places for young people. The 21st Century Ahupuaa Youth Ambassadors Program, the city's Youth Service Center and the After School A-Plus Program were among the initiatives mentioned that helped Honolulu make the list.
Over 350 municipalities compete annually to be named as a Best Community for Young People. America's Promise Alliance was founded in 1997 with General Colin Powell as its first chairman. The organization is currently chaired by Powell's wife Alma.
