Hawaii's unemployment rate holding steady

HONOLULU (AP) - The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports Hawaii had one of the nation's largest over-the-month percentage decreases in employment in August. It said Tuesday that there were 586,500 people employed in Hawaii last month, down 6,300 from the 592,800 in July, for a drop of 1.1 percent.

The bureau says Hawaii's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady in August at 6.4 percent, the same as July. The national rate in August was 9.6 percent, up from 9.5 percent in July.

The bureau says regional and state unemployment rates were little changed in August. It says 27 states recorded unemployment rate increases, 13 registered rate decreases, and 10 states and the District of Columbia had no rate change.
