WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Despite the dominance of modern Western medicine, traditional healing arts like lomilomi, or Hawaiian massage, are still practiced and sought out by many. Amy Kalili introduces us to a traditional lomilomi practitioner who is bringing the art of lomilomi to Waikîkî.
Aloha mai kâkou. Ke ola nei nô ka welo ʻohana o Piʻilani Wright ma o kâna hana ma kçia hôkele nei.
Piʻilani Wright's family tradition continues on through her work here.
My cousin and I actually started it back in 2003.
An exec from Embassy Suites Waikîkî Beachwalk came down and really enjoyed our concept that we had there, the fact that it was really Hawaiian.
At that point, Ka Moku Ola ʻÔiwi was pretty much born.
Ua hoʻomaka ma 2003. A ua hoihoi kekahi luni no ka hôkele i ke ʻano Hawaiʻi maoli o ka hana a pçlâ i hoʻokumu ʻia ai ʻo Ka Moku Ola ʻÔiwi.
I learnt from my grandmother, her name was Dolores Kaleimamookealohikikaupea Lee. It ran in our family.
I did a lot of sitting and watching at first. And eventually she would have me participate and teach me things here and there.
It is very rhythmic in the movements.
It is more about listening to the body.
Ua aʻo ʻia au e kuʻu tûtû ʻo Delores Lee. He welo ʻohana nô. Hoʻomaka ma ka nânâ wale o ka maka a komo liʻiliʻi i ka hana ma hope. He pana nô ko ka lomi a pono e makaʻala i ka ʻuhane o ke kino.
Ma ka holo o ka manawa, ua hoʻokâʻoi ʻia aʻe nô ko Piʻilani mâkaukau ma ka lomilomi. Akâ, ʻua ʻike leʻa ʻo ia, ʻaʻole nô pili wale nô ka lomilomi i kekahi mau keʻehina lima a me ka ʻoni hoʻi o ke kino. Aia mâ ʻô loa aku o kçlâ.
Besides perfecting the mechanics of lomi, Piʻilani learned that Hawaiian massage is more than just phycisal movements.
What we believe is our ancestors work through us to help that person.
So whatever is going on with you personally, you gotta let that go, you gotta focus on that person and you also begin with a pule.
So we do the pule to call in our ancestors.
It is kind of like connecting your soul to that person's soul at the same time.
Ke hana nei nâ kupuna ma o ko mâkou kino no ke kôkua a lapaʻau i ia kanaka. Pono e kia ka noʻonoʻo. He mea pili ʻuhane nô.
It is not just healing on a physical level, it is mental, physical, emotional and spiritual. That is what makes lomi different from other styles.
Lomi is not something you do just as a fun treat, it is something that you do to take care of you.
He pili i ke kino, ka ʻuhane, nâ haʻawina o ka naʻau a pçlâ. ʻO ka mea e ʻokoʻa ai ka lomi Hawaiʻi. ʻAʻole ia he mea hoʻonanea wale. He lâʻau nô.
E kip aku nô iâ Piʻilani ma ka hôkele ʻo Outrigger Emabassy Suites no ka lomilomi. Aloha.
Go see Piʻilani at Outrigger Embassy Suites to get your lomi! Aloha.
