HONOLULU (AP) - Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. will face off against his sole challenger, Diana LaBedz, in next month's general election. Carvalho led LaBedz, a chemical dependency counselor, with 86 percent of the vote in early returns of Saturday's primary election in the nonpartisan race. Under county rules, the top two primary vote-getters advance to the November 2 general election.
Carvalho is seeking his first full term.
The 48-year-old Carvalho was elected in November 2008 in a special election to fill the remaining two years of the term of Mayor Brian Baptiste, who died five months earlier.
Previously, Carvalho directed the county parks and recreation department.
